Contemporary Urban Life
We as humans tend to coalesce, gathering in groups for safety or a sense of togetherness. According to a 2016 study performed by the UN, just over half of the world’s population lives in urban areas, with this number expected to increase to 60% by 2030. However, despite the growing number of people within cities, city life can feel somewhat isolating. In urban spaces, we are so closely intertwined with strangers - we walk the line between feeling inspired and feeling lonely. And yet, we live in awe and wonderment of these places due to their beauty and intrigue. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that artists want to reconcile this dichotomy between intimacy and isolation which city life encompasses. Painters such as Rogers Naylor or Steven S. Walker investigate the warmth and familiarity of an urban coffee shop or street scene, while artists like Leslie Nolan portray the potential bleak reality of urban corporate business. Works by artists such as Charles Ross, and Lindsay Mullen may not be literally representational of cities, but still evoke the nostalgic intrepid sentiment of the typical concrete jungle through abstracted expressionistic compositions that feature muted grays and sharp, rough textures. Curated by intern Alexandra Cirelli, Contemporary Urban Life combines artworks from gallery artists at Susan Calloway Fine Arts for an exhibition about life in the “big city.” Whether gritty, beautiful, or a combination of the two, urbanism makes for a contemplative, sophisticated, and alluring artistic subject matter. On view: July 14 - August 5, 2017
